"On January 21st., 1996, at precisely 6:01 pm. EAMONN McGIRR broke the world-record for non-stop singing. Millions of T.V. viewers throughout the world witnessed this massive human endurance effort, which, in fact, lasted for a total of 11 days, 20 minutes!"

The marathon was dedicated to his daughter, Mareena, who has cerebral palsy, and is confined to a wheel-chair. While singing continuously, Eamonn raised money for the Center for the Disabled in Albany, Up-state New York. The C.P. Telethon produced a record-breaking $1.3m on Sun., Jan. 21st., and Eamonn was delighted to be a huge part of that success.

"DIFFERENT - YET THE SAME" sums up the message that Eamonn projected across the world throughout the grueling marathon: "Look past the wheelchair, look past the walker, look past the support: there is a child, a human being - different, yet the same!" "He won't ask for your pity or your sympathy - but surely you should care!"

Tragedy struck. On November 3^rd 1996, within a year of the marathon, Eamonn suffered a devastating accident. As a result he is now quadrapalegic, paralyzed from the chest down and is himself now confined to a wheelchair. A rather ironic twist of fate. Eamonn's doctors have strongly indicated in many ways that, not only will he never be able to walk again, but that he will never regain fine motor movements in his fingers. So Eamonn says, "We'll see about that!!"
